Induction Year: 2017

Chief of Deputy John A. Campbell, Class of 1986, was nominated to the MHS Alumni Hall of Fame by Dee Arnold who was one of John’s high school teachers. Dr. Lynn Campbell added information to his brother’s nomination. Most of this article is taken from Lynn’s nomination letter.

John dedicated his life to law enforcement, rising through the ranks within multiple departments to reach positions of authority and high responsibility. He was a decorated officer, receiving recognition for putting the safety of others before his own, and always looking to do the right thing when the duty called.

In the 30 years he lived beyond graduating from MHS, John’s endeavors were remarkable and noteworthy. Coming from the home of a single mom with six siblings, John was able to stay focused and show determination and grit. While his mom’s bar tending wage and tips sustained him, John gained much more from her work ethic and commitment to do what’s right. John began his post high school education at Kent State University, but he left Kent to become a police officer which is what he really wanted to do.

John graduated from the police academy, worked as a deputy in Carroll and Wayne counties, became a field agent for Liquor Control, and worked his way up to Agent in charge. John received many accolades and awards, along with certifications and educational endorsements. After retiring from the Department of Public Safety, John was recruited by the Stark County Sheriff to serve in the capacity of Chief Deputy, which he did until his untimely death.

Throughout his life, John took many risks and always found a way to reach his goals. He moved to Toledo for a while to acquire his first Agent in Charge position, knowing he would one day come back to Stark County. As a loving husband and father of two sons, this was a big chance to take. However, he had a goal to better his career for the betterment of his family, and he made it work. All the while, Tami and John Michael and Josh stayed on the front burner as John remained a model family man.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, John was an absolute joy to be around. No matter where he went, John’s jocular personality was noticed and appreciated by all. John had a way of connecting with people, helping them see the brighter side of things. His undoubtedly served him well in his career and life.

Among his many awards, John was the recipient of the Life Saving Award from the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association, a Certificate of Exceptional Duty from the Ohio Department of Public Safety., the Dean’s Scholar award from the Southern Police Institute ,and he became an Honorable Kentucky Colonel.

In summation, Lynn recommended the induction of John to the MHS Alumni Hall of Fame. John overcame the odds, leading him to a most wonderful career; he was a tremendous husband and father; and he lived life beyond high school in a way that could serve as a model for today’s MHS graduates. John was proud t o be a Minerva Lion, and as evidenced by the outpouring of love and community support during his funeral procession, Minerva was proud to have had John.
